Peep Projects is excited to announce the opening of "Summoning," featuring works from the winners of our juried two-person exhibition open call. The exhibition includes sculptural wall works by Denmark-based artist Christine Overvad Hansen and large-scale paintings by NYC-based artist Chunghee Yun. In "Summoning," both artists explore themes such as agency, power dynamics, and the intricacies of human experience. They do this through their unique techniques and materials while challenging and subverting Western cultural history.
Chunghee Yun’s large-scale paintings challenge patriarchal narratives, emphasizing the active roles women have historically played. Her prominent piece, “The Summoning of a Deer,” reinterprets Rembrandt’s “The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp,” transforming an autopsy into a mystical ritual highlighting women as active participants. Her other paintings delve into the intricacies of romantic entanglements, using sex as a metaphor for the boundaries that individuals traverse in intimate relationships, highlighting the merging of self and other.
In contrast, Christine Overvad Hansen critiques late capitalism, blending ancient myths with contemporary societal issues to explore how they shape human identity. By integrating classical sculpting techniques with performative elements, she reframes sculpture as a living narrative rather than a static object, using diverse materials to create multi-layered narratives.
Together, their works highlight themes of strength and vulnerability, inviting viewers to reflect on love and power within our interconnected lives.
